Horse Riding in Central Mongolia

Horse riding in central Mongolia is one of our most popular activities covering this part of the country. On this trip you will visit the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery, one of Mongolia’s oldest temples and a scenic waterfall in a UNESCO Heritage Site. You will sit on horseback while travelling on serene steppe plains surrounded by high mountains and vast forests and ride camels through desert landscapes dominated by pale yellow sand dunes. Read on to learn more about all the experiences this adventurous tour has to offer!

Tour Details

The Orkhon valley in central Mongolia, along the Orkhon River in the Övörkhangai and Arkhangai Provinces, was the center of the Mongol Empire, the center of the Uighur Empire, and the birthplace of Mongolian Buddhism. Today, the cultural heritage of this valley constitutes a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Important sites in this region include:

  • Karakorum the ruins of capital city of the Mongol Empire, built by Genghis Khan’s son, Ogedei.
  • Ordu-Baliq an archaeological site on the remains of the capital city of the first Uighur Empire
  • The Erdene Zuu Monastery the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia
  • The Tuvkhun Monastery
  • The Khustain Nuruu National Park

Going horse riding in central Mongolia means you’ll get to experience life on the steppe the way Mongolians have been living for hundreds of years! During this tour you will stay in traditional gers with made up beds, rather than the more basic tents of other tours. Comfortable adventures guaranteed!

Itinerary

Day 1Meet in Ulaanbaatar and visiting Erdenezuu Monastery

Assembly at our meeting point in Ulaanbaatar. We will then drive to Kharkorin by jeep or van to visit the Erdenezuu Monastery, the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. Built in 1585 with a Chinese-style roof covered with green tiles. Outside this monastery sits a stone phallus which means restrain the sexual impulses of the monks and ensure their good behavior.

Day 2Tuvkhun Temple and Orkhon Waterfall

After breakfast we will go directly to the Tuvkhun temple , one of Mongolia’s oldest surviving Buddhist monasteries established in 1648 by the then 14 year old monk Zanabazar. A gifted sculptor, painter and musician, Zanabazar used this monastery as personal retreat for almost 30 years. This place is also known as his ‘happy secluded place’ where he developed the Soyombo script. Afterwards we will visit the Orkhon waterfall, known as Ulaan Tsutgalan, located in one of Mongolia’s UNESCO Heritage Sites, the Orkhon Valley. This waterfall is 10 meters wide and over 20 meters high!

Day 3Horse Riding on 8 lakes

Start your day by horse riding in the Eight Lakes region, also known as Khuisyn Naiman Nuur, a serene place surrounded by Mongolian high mountains and vast forests.

Day 4-6 Horse Riding on 8 lakes

We give you more opportunities to experience the wildness of Mongolian nature by riding horses through the Eight Lakes region, which was formed by volcanic eruptions. This area lies at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level and its 11.500 hectares have been protected since 1992 as a National Park, forming a habitat for over 50 species of birds. Enjoy a serene way of unwinding from a day of horse riding by enjoying a scenic waterfall in the afternoon.

Day 7Driving to Mini Gobi, Riding The Camel and Hiking

On this day we will drive to the semi desert of Elsen Tasarkai. Here you will spend the day riding camels and hiking through yellow pale sand dunes, sometimes as long as 80 km and 5 km wide!
